The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has confirmed the state’s first case of Powassan virus, a rare but potentially serious tick-borne illness.
The infected resident became severely ill, though it remains unclear whether the infection occurred in Illinois. Statewide tick testing is now underway to assess the risk.
Tick-Borne Threats Remain
“With warm weather still prevalent, tick-borne diseases remain a potential threat here in Illinois,” said Dr. Sameer Vohra, IDPH director.
He urged residents to “Fight the Bite” by taking preventive measures, such as wearing protective clothing, using repellents, and limiting exposure in wooded or grassy areas.
Symptoms and Risks
Powassan virus can cause a range of symptoms, including:
- Fever
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Vomiting
- Weakness
In severe cases, the illness may progress to brain inflammation or meningitis, leading to confusion, speech difficulties, loss of coordination, or seizures.
No Specific Treatment Available
Currently, there is no specific treatment for Powassan virus. Supportive medical care is the only option once symptoms develop.
Prevention Is Key
Health officials stress that the best protection is prevention. Recommended steps include:
- Checking for ticks after spending time outdoors
- Wearing long sleeves and pants in tick-prone areas
- Using tick repellents
- Drying clothes on high heat for 10 minutes after outdoor activities to kill hidden ticks
With the first case confirmed, Illinois residents are advised to remain vigilant against tick bites for the remainder of the warm season.
